Vectoring
Remember: Heading is a tool, not decoration.
Core points
- Vector for separation, sequencing, navigation assistance, weather avoidance or approach positioning.
- Before assigning heading, know terrain/minimum level, traffic impact and recovery plan.
- Avoid unnecessary zig-zag vectoring; each heading should support the plan.
Mumbai application
- Use vectors to build spacing into final or to protect departures.
- In monsoon, vectoring must consider weather cells and pilot limitations.
- Do not vector into another sector’s problem without coordination.
Self-check
What should exist before vectoring?
Identification, safe level, traffic assessment and a clear objective.
What is poor vectoring?
Turning aircraft without knowing how and when it will rejoin the plan.
